Enhancing Manufacturing Efficiency and Quality with edgeRX™ Vision

A leading electronics manufacturer faced a critical challenge in its high‑speed MLCC taping operations: maintaining strict quality control without sacrificing production efficiency.

The existing inspection system generated an overwhelming number of false alarms—over 99% of machine stops were unnecessary—causing frequent downtime, heavy reliance on operator judgment, and increased risk of human error. Efforts to push throughput further only heightened quality concerns, resulting in nearly 15 million units lost and approximately $95,000 in missed monthly sales.

“over 99% of machine stops were unnecessary.”

To overcome this, TDK SensEI deployed edgeRX™ Vision, a bolt‑on enhancement designed to integrate seamlessly with the customer’s existing inspection cameras and machinery. Instead of replacing legacy equipment, edgeRX™ Vision added an intelligent decision layer that autonomously evaluates inspection outcomes, reduces false stops, and restarts machines in seconds rather than minutes. A multi‑stage decision pipeline filters out noise, identifies true defects, and establishes a “digital safety net” by archiving defect images and preventing risky manual overrides.

The impact was immediate and measurable. During the proof of concept, edgeRX™ Vision inspected approximately 180 million units with 100% defect detection accuracy while reducing false stops by 80%. Restart times dropped from 2–3 minutes to just five seconds, recovering an estimated 15 million units and restoring roughly $95,000 in monthly sales across three production lines. Beyond the metrics, the solution reduced operator fatigue, prevented a potential quality escape, and reinforced confidence in both production speed and inspection integrity.

“The impact was immediate and measurable.”

By resolving the longstanding trade‑off between efficiency and quality, edgeRX™ Vision enabled the manufacturer to scale with confidence—protecting quality, maximizing throughput, and delivering long‑term return on investment without disrupting existing operations.
